Tuatha Dé Danann (Gaelic for “People of the Goddess Danu”) (pronounced (Thoo-a day Du-non) ‘tribe of Danu.’ In Celtic mythology are a race that inhabited Ireland before the arrival of the Milesians (the ancestors of the modern Irish). They were said to have been skilled in magic, and the earliest reference to them relates that after they were banished from heaven because of their knowledge, they descended on Ireland in a cloud of mist. (Book of Invasions history of Ireland from the earliest times treats them as actual people; in Irish legend they have become associated with the fairies that occupy the Irish lands).
The Tuatha Dé Danann were a race of God-like people gifted with mystical powers. They were said to have invaded and ruled Ireland over four thousand years ago. According to an ancient document known as the Annals of the Four Masters compiled by Franciscan monks the The Tuatha Dé Danann ruled from 1897 BC until 1700 BC. Danu is the most ancient of the Celtic goddess’. She was referred to as the mother of the Irish gods, which indicates that she was a Mother Goddess. In this guise she represented the earth and its abundance. Danu, also spelled Anu, (ancient Egyptian for A-New) is primary earth-mother goddess and female principle.
Common symbols associated with the goddess Danu include fish, horses, amber, gold, rivers, holy stones, the four elements, and keys. She is considered a ‘reconstructed goddess’ (aren’t we all?) because there are no surviving texts or artworks attributed to her which allows her to remain a mystery. As a creator goddess she is connected to the magic of earth and its elements. She is a goddess of fertility, richness, and affluence. She commands rivers, streams and magic wells. Her trees are the rowan tree, Nowadays we celebrate the Day of Danu on January 18.
No one truly knows the original home of The Tuatha Dé Danann; However it is said that it could be reached by traveling west over the sea to a lost land (island) or passing through the dimensional gateways of the Sidhe (shee) Fairy mounds. In such places, the veil between the worlds is very thin. Within this magical realm lives eternal youth, beauty, joy and plenty, and also the passage of Time, which takes one to invisible places in-between worlds and memories; in the realm of the Shee, (the Fairy Realm) Time stands still.
