They were said to have been skilled in magic, and the earliest reference to them relates that after they were banished from heaven because of their knowledge, they descended on Ireland in a cloud of mist. Danu is the most ancient of the Celtic gods. She was referred to as the mother of the Irish gods, which indicates that she was a mother goddess. In this guise she probably represented the earth and its fruitfulness. Danu, also spelled Anu, the earth-mother goddess or female principle, was honored under various names. Common symbols associated with the Danu goddess include fish, horses, seagulls, amber, gold, rivers, holy stones, the four elements, crowns, and keys She is considered a reconstructed goddess because there are no surviving texts or artworks attributed to her. So much about her remains a mystery. As a creator goddess she is connected to earth and water. She is a goddess of fertility, abundance, and prosperity. Danu, commands rivers and helps humans find wells or spring. Her trees are the rowan tree, long honored by the Celts for its balance of beauty and hardiness, the apple tree, and the hawthorne tree.
