Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and generosity. She is the embodiment of natural elegance. She is the goddess who protects from all kinds of human misery and money associated sorrows. Lakshmi is also called ‘Shri’, which means the female energy of Supreme Being. The prefix Shri, pronounced (shree/shreem) means wealth of any kind. Lakshmi is goddess of the means to achieving what the heart desires including prosperity. She is a goddess who grants both worldly prosperity as well as the knowledge that worldly prosperity is fleeting like water thru fingers, it cannot be held long
In Bengal, Lakshmi is worshiped during an Autumn full moon, the brightest night of the year. she is believed to shower wealth on this night. She along with her mount, the great white owl, descends to earth and takes away the darkness of poverty, stagnation, anger, and laziness from our lives.
The significance of her owl is that it takes her to the darker areas so they too can become enlightened. It is believed that Lakshmi’s wealth goes only to those houses which are clean and where the people are hardworking. She does not visit the places which are unclean/dirty or where the people are lazy.
Lakshmi is the household goddess of most Hindu families, and a favorite of women. Lakshmi is depicted as a beautiful woman of golden complexion, with four hands, sitting or standing on a full-bloomed lotus and holding a lotus bud, which stands for beauty, purity and fertility. Cascades of gold coins are seen flowing from her hands, suggesting that those who worship her gain wealth. She always wears gold embroidered red clothes. Red symbolizes activity and the golden lining indicates prosperity. Myth has it that Lakshmi rose out of a sea of milk, the primordial cosmic ocean, with a red lotus in her hand. The lotus is about purity and spiritual power. Rooted in the mud but blossoming above the water, untainted by the mud. The lotus represents the power to rise above. To be seated upon a lotus suggests that the being in question has transcended the limitations of the finite world and floats freely in a sphere of pure light. Lakshmi combines royal and priestly power in her divinely humble presence.
